on January 14, a day before Makar Sankranti on January 15.
Rituals Of Lohri:
- Bonfire Customs: People start by lighting a bonfire (Lohri) in the evening, and
gather with their families and friends around bonfire. Just like Thanksgiving,
they offer popcorn, sesame seeds, jaggery, gajak, rewdi, and peanuts to the fire.
- Traditional Eats: Punjab is well-known for its delicious food, especially during
Lohri. People share dishes like sarso da saag, Makke di roti, jaggery (gur), and sesame seeds. Don't forget to share sweets and other treats with your family
and neighbors. Have a good time with traditional songs and dancing around the
bonfire in the evening.
- Exchange Of Gifts: Exchange gifts with your friends and family members with a
symbol of goodwill and prosperity.
- Traditional Attire: People wear beautiful traditional Punjabi attires.
What not to do on Lohri ?
- Avoid Negativity: Try to be surrounded with positivity on the day of Lohri. On this day,
dress yourself up in new clothes to welcome this day. As Lohri is about the end of
winters, so welcome it with positive energies and with full warmth.
- Try To Limit Alcohol Consumption: As it is the day for the celebration, try to limit the
consumption of alcohol. As it is the day of celebration and welcoming longer days, so
try to limit any kind of bad habits. Enjoy with your family and friends with full spirit.
- Avoid Harmful Crackers: Sometimes use of harmful crackers can cause damage to
surroundings. It can also harm your family and friends. Try to burst crackers in a limit for
safety purposes.
